Wellington Social Club for the Blind

Mr S.R.M. Jenkins was elected as Hon. Solicitor at the Annual General Meeting in 1957. Dick as we all knew him took a very active interest in club matters regularly attending monthly meetings.

In 1966 when the club purchased its new club rooms in Westbrook House, Dick was instrumental in dealing with all the legal issues on behalf of the club.

Westbrook House which is located in Willis Street is a multi-storied building and our club purchased freehold the 1st Floor for 24,000 pounds the money was raised over many years with various fundraising activities. The club was equipped with furniture, cups and saucers and many other items which were donated by various firms in Wellington and it was through Dick that this was possible.

Westbrook house was controlled by a Board of Directors and Dick was our representative for many years and our club was always very appreciative of his contributions.

In 1988 in recognition of his services to the club he was awarded Life Membership for his long and meritorious services. Dick for personal reasons resigned his position as Hon. Solicitor in 1988 after 31 years of dedicated service.

Dick continued to take an active interest as a Life Member attending AGMs and other functions. His tragic death in 2004 was a great shock to us all.
